Volunteer SC is a free state-wide network meant to help connect volunteers with volunteer opportunities. This network is a three-way collaboration by the South Carolina Commission on National and Community Service (AmeriCorps SC), Together SC, and the United Way Association of South Carolina for the free and open benefit of the entire volunteer sector in South Carolina.

Qualifying Organizations:

The following entities are generally eligible to be in the Volunteer SC Network:

• Faith-based institutions
• Indian tribes and tribal organizations
• Labor organizations
• Nonprofit organizations
• Partnerships and consortia
• Schools, school districts, and institutions of higher education
• State and local government agencies

Prohibited Activities:

Agencies that ask volunteers to participate in any of the activities below will not be eligible to participate in or post volunteer opportunities to VolunteerSC.org

• Attempting to influence legislation  

• Organizing or engaging in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes  

• Assisting, promoting, or deterring union organizing  

• Impairing existing contracts for services or collective bargaining agreements  

• Engaging in partisan political activities, or other activities designed to influence the outcome of an election to any public office  

• Participating in, or endorsing, events or activities that are likely to include advocacy for or against political parties, political platforms, political candidates, proposed legislation, or elected officials  

• Engaging in religious instruction, conducting worship services, providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship, constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship, maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship, or engaging in any form of religious proselytization  
  • Providing a direct benefit to—   
  • a business organized for profit,  
  • a labor union,  
  • a partisan political organization,  
  • a nonprofit organization that fails to comply with the restrictions contained in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 related to engaging in political activities or substantial amount of lobbying except that nothing in these provisions shall be construed to prevent participants from engaging in advocacy activities undertaken at their own initiative, and 

• • an organization engaged in the religious activities described in paragraph C. 7. [of ASN Terms and Conditions], unless volunteer assistance is not used to support those religious activities.  

• Conducting a voter registration drive

• Providing abortion services or referrals for receipt of such services 

• Any activity prohibited by applicable Executive Order/Memorandum; and,   

• Such other activities as AmeriCorps and partnership overseeing VolunteerSC.org may prohibit. 

In addition to the above-listed activities, the activities listed below are expressly prohibited: 

CENSUS ACTIVITIES 

Agencies in the Volunteer SC Network may not engage in census activities during service hours. Being a census taker during service hours is categorically prohibited. Census-related activities (e.g., promotion of the Census, education about the importance of the Census) do not align with Volunteer SC Objectives

ELECTION AND POLLING ACTIVITIES 

Volunteers with an agency in the Volunteer SC Network may not provide services for election or polling locations or in support of such activities.
